Manifesto against bullfighting
Bullfighting is still taking place in eight countries, three of which are in the EU and five in Latin America. In addition, “bull festivals” (folk festivals and patron festivals) take place in various countries around the world during which bulls, cows and calves suffer a lot. Bullfights and bull festivals cause a lot of animal suffering and bulls do not survive a fight. It is an unfair battle in which the bull is always losing and is killed slowly and painfully. Together we can stop this! By collectively speaking out against bullfights and bull festivals and not supporting or promoting these activities in any way, these medieval traditions will eventually come to an end. Join us and sign the manifesto against bullfighting. You thereby make the following promise.
I speak out against bullfighting
I declare not to carry out or promote any activities that encourage or maintain bullfights or bull festivals. This means that I do not go to bullfights or bull festivals, do not visit bullfighting museums or active arenas, do not go on excursions to bull farms and actively speak out against bullfighting when possible and appropriate. I am in favour of a ban on bullfights and bull festivals.
For MEPs
As a MEP, I am committed to ensuring that:
- Animals and their welfare are also taken seriously in the context of culture, tradition, sport(s) and entertainment. The use of animals should be prohibited when good animal welfare cannot be guaranteed.
- When European treaties are amended, Article 13 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union has to be amended to make clear that animal welfare must also be taken into account in the context of culture, tradition and religion.
- Bullfights and similar events are being banned.
- Children are being protected against the violence of bullfights, as the UN already asked bullfighting countries in 2014. This means that a minimum age of 18 will apply to attending bullfights and similar events. Bullfighting schools are being closed.
- Under the new Common Agricultural Policy (from 2028), no more subsidies will be given to breeders of bulls and cows intended for bullfights and bull festivals.
- The meat of bulls and cows killed during or after a bullfight should no longer be offered for human consumption or otherwise marketed within the European Union.
